Aldi is one of the fastest-growing grocery chains across the world. The brand may have started out as a German venture, but it now has 10,000 locations in countries far and wide. 2,000 of these are in America, scattered out across 36 states. But when it comes to bargains, Aldi often does it better than anywhere else – though shoppers shouldn’t always take that as a given.

The supermarket already has a solid reputation for being very affordable, but don’t let that fool you into buying just any product. Hidden among some of their incredible deals are a few that might end up costing you more. Read on to find the best and worst deals at Aldi.

It’s always tempting to stick with what you know and shop at stand-bys like Walmart, but this German grocery chain is sweeping the nation. Knowing what to buy and what not to buy could make your shopping experience all the more interesting!

1. Sausage

Aldi Brand: Klement’s Summer Sausage
Price per unit: $3.49 for 12oz. package*
Verdict: Skip It

One person on Amazon didn’t hold back when they reviewed this brand, saying that Klement’s Summer Sausage is “so bad” they “refused to give [their] dog a sample” and instead threw the whole package in the garbage. Summer sausage, for those who don’t know, is a Stateside term for sausage that doesn’t have to be refrigerated until it is opened.

Aldi’s sells the Klement’s package, but maybe they shouldn’t, considering the generally negative responses. Another person online complained that the product was way too fatty, and, instead of a 2.75-pound summer sausage, they got a nearly three-pound tube of “pink beef fat,” which sounds as unappetizing as possible.

2. Burgers

Aldi Brand: Wahlburgers Fresh Gourmet Blend Angus Beef Burgers
Price per unit: $6.99 for 1.33lb. pack*
Verdict: Buy It

Wahlburgers is a fast food chain that people love, and their ground beef patties are now available in stores. According to 4TheGrill.com, Wahlburgers’ “famous” blend of hamburger meat is fresh and made from a patented blend of chuck, short rib, and brisket.

Aldi and Wahlburgers have had a partnership since a few years ago, when Aldi began selling the burgers, as well as Chef Paul’s Wahl Sauce. These are both Aldi Finds, so you’ll only be able to find them on shelves for a short time. We recommend you buy these burgers, and pick up some buns, lettuce, tomato, and condiments too, while you’re at it.

3. Cod

Aldi Brand: Wild Caught Cod Portions
Price per unit: $8.99*
Verdict: Buy It

Cod is a popular seafood choice for people who love fish, and “wild caught” means that this fish was taken from its natural habitat (ocean, river, or lake). This is basically the “free range” version of fishing, as its alternative is farmed fish. Aldi sells Wild Caught Cod Portions, and people seem to like it, judging from social media.

Reddit taste-testers said it was “moist and fresh,” even though it was frozen, and AlmostAllAldi.com said that this was their “favorite Aldi find” of the week. The portion sizes are also generous, which is something you don’t always see with frozen, wild-caught fish.

4. Sports Drinks

Aldi Brand: Gatorade G Zero Assorted Varieties
Price per unit: $1.18*
Verdict: Buy It

To determine whether you should buy the Gatorade G Zero Assorted Varieties at Aldi, just look at how great the price is. At Walmart, a four-pack of these drinks costs $12.86, which is more than $3 per drink. They cost the same at Amazon. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, you’ll pay $16.79 for an 8-pack, which works out to over $2 per drink.

Meanwhile, at Aldi you’ll get one Zero for $1.18, which is far cheaper than anywhere else. People love this sports drink because it has the same delicious taste as regular Gatorade without all the added sugar.

5. Lamb Filet

Aldi Brand: Thomas Farms Fresh Seasoned Lamb Sirloin Filet
Price per unit: $7.99*
Verdict: Buy It

According to Thomas Farms, its lambs are “humanely raised” on ranches in Australia and they are also raised on family-owned farms that have been certified as organic. That is a big plus for this product, as factory farming casts a blight on the food industry.

The Thomas Farms Fresh Seasoned Lamb Sirloin Filet comes with seasoning already on it—all you need to do is put it in the pan or on the grill. The seasoned filets seem to be better-reviewed than the non-seasoned ones, which one Target reviewer said “smelled terrible” (though, they admitted, the filets were “delicious” once cooked).

6. Poke Bowl

Aldi Brand: Blue Hill Bay Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl
Price per unit: $6.79*
Verdict: Buy It

A “Poke Bowl” is a trend in food that we’ve seen Aldi and other stores pick up. Poke is raw, diced fish that is served as a main course or appetizer. The Blue Hill Bay Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl contains rice, smoked salmon seasonings, and spices that help you create a tasty-yet-healthy meal on the go.

As someone on Amazon said, it was far preferable to a taco or burger from a fast food joint, and the Poke Bowl only takes two minutes of prep time in the microwave. If you want a quick, easy, healthy lunch, this product is for you.

7. Cauliflower-Crust Pizza

Aldi Brand: Mama Cozzi’s Pizza Kitchen 12″ Supreme Cauliflower Crust Deli Pizza
Price per unit: $7.49*
Verdict: Skip It

Frozen pizza is a quick, easy meal when you don’t feel like cooking. Some of Mama Cozzi’s pizzas are a hit, while others are not. Mama Cozzi’s Pizza Kitchen 12″ Supreme Cauliflower Crust Deli Pizza, according to Cleveland.com, is the latter. They taste-tested the pizza and found that the crust was “soggy,” something you ever want from your pizza.

Though the pizza says it has no added sugar per serving, there is sugar in the crust. According to The Kitchn, some of the best cauliflower-crust frozen pizzas include the ones from Whole Foods Market’s 365 brand and Trader Joe’s, two Aldi competitors.

8. Cheesy Pretzels

Aldi Brand: Combos Cheddar Cheese Pretzels
Price per unit: $2.19*
Verdict: Buy It

People love their Combos. This snack has been around since the 1980s. These stuffed snacks consist of tubes of pretzels, crackers, or tortillas that have been baked, dried, and filled with various fillings. The Combos Cheddar Cheese Pretzel is, as you might have guessed from the name, a hard pretzel shell stuffed with cheddar cheese.

Aldi definitely has the best price for these snacks. At Walmart, you can buy a 6.3-ounce bag for $6.69, but, at Aldi, you can get that same product for just $2.19. As always, Aldi is the reigning champ of low-price foods, even ones that are brand-name.

9. Massager

Aldi Brand: Crane’s Massage Roller
Price per unit: $12.99*
Verdict: Buy It

Foam rollers are often used to alleviate tension in your back and shoulders, soothing pain and helping the muscles loosen. The Crane’s Massage Roller is a high-density foam bar that is used to promote “muscle recovery” through massage. To be honest, it’s hard to get this product wrong.

The Crane’s Massage Roller has a pretty good rating on eBay, where it got a 4.8/5 out of 925 reviews. The Roller is cheapest at Aldi, as prices on other sides range from $15-$25, while Aldi sells this massager for just $12.99. If you’re looking for a cheap-yet-durable foam roller, you should get the Crane’s Massage Roller.

10. Fabric Softener

Aldi Brand: Downy Liquid Fabric Softener
Price per unit: $9.94 for a 129oz. container*
Verdict: Buy It

Fabric softener helps make your clothes silky-smooth and soft. A 129-ounce container of fabric softener should get you about 150 loads of laundry. At Walmart, the Downy Liquid Fabric Softener is $12.97 for that quantity, and, at Target, the price is $12.99. At Aldi, you can shave a few dollars off this product, snagging a 129-ounce container for under $10.

Downy is one of the biggest names in the laundry business, and their fabric softener is generally well-reviewed, getting high star ratings on Target’s, Downy’s, Sam’s Club’s, and Amazon’s websites. People especially love how sweet-smelling the softeners’ scents are.

11. Thermometers

Aldi Brand: Welby Non-Contact Thermometer
Price per unit: $19.49*
Verdict: Skip It

Believe it or not, Aldi, for once, doesn’t have the price advantage over everyone else with this product. The Welby Non-Contact Thermometer costs under $20, but it still isn’t the cheapest contact-free thermometer on the market. Touchless thermometers have become increasingly important since 2020, and Aldi recently began selling them as an “Aldi Find.”

On Amazon, you can find cheaper thermometers, such as the LPOW Forehead Thermometer ($18.89), Hotodeal Infrared Thermometer ($18.74), femometer Touchless Forehead Thermometer ($16.99), and more. All of these gadgets have a high rating on Amazon’s site. So, if you’re looking for a cheaper option, skip Welby’s thermometer and check out what Amazon has to offer.

12. Cheese Balls

Aldi Brand: Utz Cheese Balls
Price per unit: $5.99 for 23oz. jar*
Verdict: Buy It

Someone on Amazon called Utz Cheese Balls “the best-cheese flavored snack” that is “easily superior” to other brands. One of the reasons that these Cheese Balls have become a cult classic is because they are both gluten-free and made with real cheese. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they come in a giant tub.

Literally, the Utz Cheese Balls come in barrels. On Amazon, a 23-ounce barrel costs $13.48, but at Aldi, that same tub is just $5.99. Aldi has the lowest price for this delicious treat, so we’re saying it is a definite “Buy It” for anyone who loves cheesy, crunchy snacks.

13. Frozen Fruit Blend

Aldi Brand: Paradise Frozen Fruit Blend
Price per unit: $1-$3*
Verdict: Buy It

Trader Joe’s frozen food section is often vaunted as a must-have, but Aldi has some great items too. According to Mashed, the Paradise Fruit Blend from Aldi is an item with a “cult following.” If you’re on a smoothie kick, you’ll love the different types of fruity, delicious mixes full of vitamins, antioxidants, and other sweets.

Delish actually lists the Paradise Blend as the “number one cult-favorite” from Aldi. Often, frozen fruit loses some of its flavorings when it undergoes the freezing process, but that is, happily, not the case with Paradise. It is as sweet and juicy as if it were never frozen.

14. Cauliflower Bowls

Aldi Brand: Whole & Simple Cauliflower Bowls
Price per unit: $3.29*
Verdict: Buy It

Cauliflower is the “it” food for many dieters, as it is high in fiber, nutrients like antioxidants, choline, and sulforaphane, and is a low-carb way to get the crunch of legumes and grains. The Whole & Simple Cauliflower Bowls contain flavors like Chicken Cilantro and Lime and Mexican Style Street Corn. You can find them at Aldi for $3.29.

Much like the poke bowl, the Cauliflower Bowls make for a delicious, nutritious lunch. People especially like the Mexican Street Corn bowl. Mexican and Tex-Mex flavors go well with this type of food, and it is a “buy it” for people who want to avoid stopping at a fast-food joint for lunch.
