Stranger Than Fiction: The Real Price of Turning a True Story into a Hollywood Hit

Coming up with an original concept and shopping it to studios is a difficult task that, more often than not, ends in rejection. However, stumbling across a breathtaking real story and proposing an on-screen retelling is something else entirely. Some of history’s most awe-inspiring events turn out to be incredible blockbuster hits that can rake in audiences (and ticket sales) time and time again.

There have been over a dozen movies made about the tragic life of Marilyn Monroe, while Abraham Lincoln himself has been the subject of multiple features. From Disney to Sony, filmmakers are never shy about giving famous figures the Hollywood treatment.

However, movies based on true stories are often more difficult to produce and doubly expensive. There’s a huge amount of pressure on studios to do justice to the story and the people involved, so when it comes to making a great biopic, it’s all about the cold, hard cash.

1. The Doors (1991)

Based On the Life of: Jim Morrison
Starring: Val Kilmer
Movie Budget: $38 million*
Star Salary: $6 million*

The Doors didn’t do as well as the box office as the other films on this list. It grossed just $34 million (resulting in a $4 million loss for the studio). However, the movie ended up becoming a sleeper hit over time, turning into a cult classic. The film depicted the life of the lead singer of the band The Doors, Jim Morrison.

Morrison is played in the film by Val Kilmer. The film depicted the singer as a larger-than-life figure of the 1960s counterculture movement. It showed Morrison’s struggle with alcohol and drugs, as well as his macabre interest in death. The film was not well-received by the band in real life.

Val Kilmer himself has experienced somewhat of a career downturn in the years following the movie. Although he was once one of Hollywood’s golden boys, Kilmer now has a fortune of $25 million. He is set to appear in 2021’s Top Gun: Maverick, which is sure to be a financial hit.

2. Monster (2003)

Based On the Life of: Aileen Wuornos
Starring: Charlize Theron
Movie Budget: $8 million*
Star Salary: $1 million*

Monster is a biographical film about serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was eventually put to death by the state of Florida. Monster took a look at the real-life of Wuornos, starting from before she began killing until her capture by the police. Wuornos suffered from mental illness, which began when she was a child suffering horrific abuse at the hands of her male family members.

To play the role of the sympathetic character of Wuornos, who was despised far more than any male serial killer, Theron had to gain thirty pounds, shave her eyebrows, and wear prosthetic teeth. She received an Oscar for her stunning transformation.

The movie itself had a budget of $8 million but took an impressive $64,200 at the box office. Theron has since managed to get a pay rise for work on movies like Mad Max Fury Road. The 2015 feature took $375 million.

3. Erin Brockovich (2000)

Based On the Life of: Erin Brockovich
Starring: Julia Roberts
Movie Budget: $51 million*
Star Salary: $20 million*

Erin Brockovich’s eponymous film won Julia Roberts an Oscar for her portrayal of the law-clerk-turned-environmental-activist. Erin Brockovich was about the case of Anderson v. Pacific Gas and Electric, a case investigated and filed by Brockovich when she was just a lowly law clerk. Brockovich had discovered that a major corporation was polluting the water of her town of Hinkley, California.

The people of Hinkley were getting sick and dying from drinking water contaminated by hexavalent chromium. The movie follows Brockovich’s fight to get people in power to take her seriously and stand up to a heartless corporation in order to save lives that were deemed less valuable than profit.

The thrilling, emotional true story certainly hit the right note with audiences who flocked to see it. Erin Brockovich took $256.3 million against a budget of $51 million, making it one of the stand-out successes of the entire year.

4. The Blind Side (2009)

Based On the Life of: Leigh Anne Tuohy
Starring: Sandra Bullock
Movie Budget: $29 million*
Star Salary: $5 million*

The Blind Side starred Sandra Bullock as Lee Ann Tuohy and Quinton Aaron as Michael Oher. In real life, as well as the film adaptation, Touhy adopted Oher and helped him recognize his natural talent for American football. Oher achieved his goal of becoming an NFL player with Touhy’s help, and he was drafted in the first round of the NFL by the Ravens.

Oher’s true story was chronicled by Michael Lewis, who wrote the biography, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, on which the movie’s screenplay was based. Bullock won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role as Touhy, and the film itself earned $309.2 million at the box office.

Sandra herself has appeared in multiple big hits over the course of her career, all contributing to her net worth of $155 million. Her most financially successful film to date is the animated hit Minions, but in 2010 and 2014 she also scooped the title of Highest Paid Actress in the World.

5. Hitchcock (2012)

Based On the Life of: Alfred Hitchcock
Starring: Anthony Hopkins
Movie Budget: $15 million*
Star Salary: $800,000*

Alfred Hitchcock has gone down in history as one of the best filmmakers, bar none, for his suspenseful masterpieces. Hitchcock is a biographical movie about the life and work of the famed director. Specifically, Hitchcock focuses on the relationship between the director and his wife (played by Helen Mirren) during the making of the legendary horror flick Psycho.

Psycho, of course, would go on to become one of the most influential movies of all time, achieving a near-mythological place in the pantheon of horror. Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the classic director was praised by critics, who noted his uncanny likeness as well.

Hopkins has starred in a plethora of hits, but Hitchcock wasn’t a box office smash. Although it took a respectable $27 million, compared to its $15 million budget it wasn’t quite the money-maker that studio executives had hoped it would be.

6. The Theory of Everything (2014)

Based On the Life of: Stephen Hawking
Starring: Eddie Redmayne
Movie Budget: $15 million*
Star Salary: $250,000*

The Theory of Everything was a biographical film about the life of Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, who was a physicist and researcher who changed the course of scientific history with his breakthroughs. In the movie the renowned scientist’s life gets the Hollywood effect, focusing just as much on his romantic life and his illness as it does his accomplishments.

The film, which took elements from a book by Hawking’s wife about their life together, won several Oscars and earned $123.7 million at the box office. It was distributed by indie and foreign film stalwart Focus Features.

Redmayne went on to find further success as part of the $25-billion-dollar Harry Potter franchise as a leading character in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He also won critical praise for his part in The Danish Girl, which took over $64 million.

7. Ali (2001)

Based On the Life of: Muhammad Ali
Starring: Will Smith
Movie Budget: $107 million*
Star Salary: $20 million*

To portray the role of famous boxer Muhammad Ali in this movie, Will Smith had to pack on muscle, study boxing and Islam, and throw himself into the role. It worked, as Smith’s role in the 2001 biography Ali would prove that he had serious mettle as a dramatic actor. Ali was directed and written by Michael Mann.

The film focused on ten specific years in the life of Muhammad Ali, from 1964 until 1974. Though a short period, it encompassed a lot: Ali’s recapturing of his title from Sonny Liston, his Vietnam War resistance, and his conversion to Islam.

The movie wasn’t cheap to make, with production costs exceeding $107 million. The studio had hoped that the movie would pack a punch at the box office, but they were sadly mistaken. All in all, Ali ended up costing Columbia Pictures close to $20 million.

8. My Week With Marilyn (2011)

Based On the Life of: Marilyn Monroe
Starring: Michelle Williams
Movie Budget: $10 million*
Star Salary: $400,000*

My Week with Marilyn centered around a short period of time in the life of the iconic star Marilyn Monroe. The movie starred Michelle Williams as Monroe and Eddie Redmayne as her friend, amateur filmmaker Colin Clark, who wrote a novel about his experiences showing Monroe around London during her filming of The Prince and the Showgirl.

The movie takes a look at the real Marilyn behind the veneer of the legacy she left behind. Not the glittery, glamorous, larger-than-life figure that everyone knows – but rather the real human being with personal struggles and a complex relationship with her image and fame.

By the time of her passing, Monroe was worth $7 million. It seems like a paltry figure considering just how prolific she is, but that equates to close to $60 million when adjusted for inflation. In her lifetime, Marilyn was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.

9. 127 Hours (2010)

Based On the Life of: Aron Ralston
Starring: James Franco
Movie Budget: $18 million*
Star Salary: $2 million*

127 Hours is an intense biographical film about Aron Ralston. Ralston, who is played by James Franco, is a canyon explorer who was trapped by a boulder after an accident in Bluejohn Canyon, a slot canyon in southeastern Utah. The movie is filmed like a video diary.

We watch as Ralston tries to free himself to no avail. The movie was based on Ralston’s autobiography, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, in which he talked about his 127-hour time spent trapped. At the end of the five days trapped, Ralston was faced with a brutal choice in order to keep himself alive.

127 Hours helped propel James Franco to a new level of stardom, as the actor went on to appear in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, This Is the End, and the critically acclaimed hit, The Disaster Artist. Franco is now worth $23 million.

10. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Based On the Life of: Jordan Belfort
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio
Movie Budget: $100 million*
Star Salary: $25 million*

Jordan Belfort wrote his autobiography, The Wolf of Wall Street,  chronicling the crazy excessive lives of Wall Street stockbrokers in the 1980s. In the hands of Martin Scorsese, the eventual film adaptation was a masterpiece starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort.

Belfort’s firm, Stratton Oakmont, was one of the most corrupt firms on Wall Street, famously defrauding its clients and the government. Belfort ended up getting caught, and he went from a rich Wall Street stockbroker to an inmate. Margot Robbie stars as his wife, and Jonah Hill portrays the role of his business partner.

The movie itself was one of the most successful projects of the year, taking a huge $330 million across the world. It also helped give Margot Robbie a platform, helping her to get cast in more lucrative leading parts, such as the character Harley Quinn in the DCEU.

11. The Imitation Game (2014)

Based On the Life of: Alan Turing
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch
Movie Budget: $14 million*
Star Salary: $4.7 million*

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game received several Oscar nominations, winning some. The movie was based on the life of Alan Turing, a genius recruited by M16 to crack Nazi codes. Turing, who was educated at Cambridge, was in charge of cracking Enigma, a Nazi code previous thought to be unbreakable.

The movie was based on the real-life of the mathematics prodigy, which was detailed in Alan Turing: The Enigma, a book written by Andrew Hodges. The movie also explores Turing’s struggle against homophobia, as he was sent to prison in 1952 after authorities discovered he was gay.

12. Walk the Line (2005)

Based On the Life of: Johnny Cash
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix
Movie Budget: $28 million*
Star Salary: $5 million*

Walk the Line is an Oscar-nominated drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix plays Johnny Cash, the legendary singer-songwriter who was one of the most famous musicians of his time. Cash went through a lot of struggles, and he wrote about them in his autobiographies, titled Man In Black and Cash: The Autobiography.

These autobiographies were bought as the basis for this movie, distributed by 20th Century Fox, which made $187 million at the box office. In the film, we see the true story of Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter (played by Witherspoon), as well as his struggles with drug addiction and alcoholism.

Both Witherspoon and Phoenix were highly praised for their performances. Phoenix especially has gone onto some incredible things since and now has a net worth of $38 million. He also starred in the hit movie Joker in 2019, which took a phenomenal $1.074 billion, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of all-time.

13. The King’s Speech (2010)

Based On the Life of: King George VI
Starring: Colin Firth
Movie Budget: $15 million*
Star Salary: $1 million*

The King’s Speech is a heartwarming historical drama that centers around the story of King George VI. King George VI, in the movie, is not yet king. He struggles with a severe speech impediment (a stammer) that requires him to seek the help of Lionel Logue, a speech therapist with unorthodox tactics.

Historical dramas are often a bigger financial risk at the box office, but with big names like Firth attached and backing from Momentum Pictures, this movie was set for success from the start. After a great showing on the festival circuit, The King’s Speech went on to amass $424 million at the box office, compared to a meager production budget of just $15 million.

When you think about just how much money the movie made, it makes its star’s salaries seem almost insignificant, however, the leading stars did get a slice of the pie. According to The Guardian, the main cast members split a $75 million share of the profits.

14. Ray (2004)

Based On the Life of: Ray Charles
Starring: Jamie Foxx
Movie Budget: $40 million*
Star Salary: $4 million*

Ray Charles is one of the most famous blues musicians of the modern era. Charles’ nearly unbelievable life story inspired a biographical drama about him, simply titled Ray. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford and written by James L. White, telling the story of how Charles went blind at only seven years old, and yet still ruthlessly pursued a music career.

The movie, produced jointly by Bristol Bay Productions and Anvil Films with help from Baldwin Entertainment Group, had an impressive budget of $40 million. Distributed by Universal Pictures, Ray went on to make a whopping $124.7 million at the box office, and win an Oscar for Foxx.

Jamie Foxx himself has gained a very considerable fortune of over $110 million thanks to his acting and business endeavors. The star has also made a pretty penny from his work in the music business, working with artists like Kanye West and Ne-Yo.
