Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.08%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy , Telecoms and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.08%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which rose 8.92% or 0.52 points to trade at 6.35 at the close. Seabridge Gold Inc . (TSX: SEA ) added 7.11% or 1.80 points to end at 27.12 and Cogeco Communications Inc (TSX: CCA ) was up 3.18% or 3.41 points to 110.79 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ), which lost 5.11% or 0.41 points to trade at 7.62 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX: ENGH ) declined 5.11% or 2.01 points to end at 37.29 and North West Company Inc (TSX: NWC ) shed 4.85% or 1.87 points to 36.67.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 588 to 452 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 27.36% to 7.54 a new 52-week low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.60% or 11.95 to $1,972.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.08% or 2.17 to hit $106.42 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 2.45% or 2.66 to trade at $111.44 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.30% to 0.79, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.24% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 100.31.
