Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.12%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples , Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.12%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ), which rose 9.47% or 1.10 points to trade at 12.71 at the close. George Weston Limited (TSX: WN ) added 6.38% or 8.19 points to end at 136.57 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX: BIR ) was up 5.19% or 0.345 points to 6.995 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX: LSPD ), which lost 11.50% or 16.42 points to trade at 126.34 in late trade. Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp (TSX: LIF ) declined 7.46% or 2.74 points to end at 34.01 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) shed 5.73% or 0.125 points to 2.055.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 539 to 444 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.70% or 12.15 to $1725.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.61% or 0.46 to hit $74.83 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.40% or 0.31 to trade at $78.04 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.49% to 0.7843, while CAD/EUR rose 0.30% to 0.6764.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.66% at 94.398.
