Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.29%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy , IT and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.29%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TSX: MEG ), which rose 6.72% or 0.90 points to trade at 14.29 at the close. Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) added 5.50% or 1.04 points to end at 19.94 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX: ERF ) was up 5.29% or 0.75 points to 14.93 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX: WDO ), which lost 5.34% or 0.62 points to trade at 11.00 in late trade. K92 Mining Inc (TSX: KNT ) declined 4.43% or 0.32 points to end at 7.00 and SNC-Lavalin Group Inc . (TSX: SNC ) shed 4.50% or 1.35 points to 28.63.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 677 to 354 and 105 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.73% to 15.72.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.20% or 3.65 to $1817.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.40% or 1.97 to hit $84.09 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.20% or 1.86 to trade at $86.33 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.25% to 0.7966, while CAD/EUR rose 0.11% to 0.6977.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 95.145.
