Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.48%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Energy and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.48%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ), which rose 8.94% or 2.28 points to trade at 27.79 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ) added 6.27% or 0.38 points to end at 6.44 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX: ERF ) was up 6.26% or 1.07 points to 18.16 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Osisko Mining Corp (TSX: OSK ), which lost 4.04% or 0.16 points to trade at 3.80 in late trade. Canaccord Genuity Group Inc (TSX: CF ) declined 3.42% or 0.35 points to end at 9.89 and New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ) shed 2.84% or 0.05 points to 1.71.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 615 to 420 and 83 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 11.06% to 22.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.69% or 12.87 to $1,852.53 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.91% or 1.00 to hit $110.77 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.66% or 0.73 to trade at $111.42 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.58% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.30% at 102.18.
