Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.57%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Utilities and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.57%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Denison Mines Corp (TSX: DML ), which rose 7.80% or 0.14 points to trade at 1.86 at the close. NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE ) added 6.20% or 0.330 points to end at 5.650 and Cameco Corp (TSX: CCO ) was up 4.59% or 1.25 points to 28.50 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX: TRQ ), which lost 7.69% or 1.60 points to trade at 19.20 in late trade. New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ) declined 5.08% or 0.090 points to end at 1.680 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) shed 3.96% or 0.35 points to 8.48.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 563 to 471 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.32% to 14.25.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.32% or 5.75 to $1778.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.06% or 0.75 to hit $71.48 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.91% or 0.67 to trade at $74.37 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.15% to 0.7785, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6895.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.24% at 96.310.
