Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.85%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare , Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.85%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MAG Silver Corp (TSX: MAG ), which rose 10.00% or 2.07 points to trade at 22.77 at the close. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) added 9.54% or 0.250 points to end at 2.870 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX: TXG ) was up 9.40% or 1.88 points to 21.89 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ), which lost 3.80% or 0.07 points to trade at 1.77 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX: ENGH ) declined 3.74% or 2.68 points to end at 68.93 and MEG Energy Corp (TSX: MEG ) shed 3.67% or 0.11 points to 2.89.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 648 to 404 and 105 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.98% or 19.15 to $1967.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.08% or 0.03 to hit $37.30 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.48% or 0.19 to trade at $39.64 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.7588, while CAD/EUR fell 0.04% to 0.6397.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.28% at 93.078.
