Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.08%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy , REITs and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.08% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ), which rose 11.26% or 0.86 points to trade at 8.50 at the close. Aphria Inc (TSX: APHA ) added 7.75% or 1.760 points to end at 24.460 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX: TXG ) was up 7.14% or 1.11 points to 16.73 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Northland Power Inc . (TSX: NPI ), which lost 4.47% or 2.01 points to trade at 42.94 in late trade. Altus Group Limited (TSX: AIF ) declined 3.82% or 1.98 points to end at 49.90 and TransAlta Corp (TSX: TA ) shed 3.06% or 0.35 points to 11.27.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 736 to 304 and 104 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.41% or 7.40 to $1798.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.66% or 1.64 to hit $63.31 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 2.75% or 1.77 to trade at $66.25 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.43% to 0.7977, while CAD/EUR rose 0.45% to 0.6566.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.00% at 90.168.
