Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.18%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT , Consumer Discretionary and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.18%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Richelieu Hardware Ltd. (TSX: RCH ), which rose 6.75% or 2.79 points to trade at 44.15 at the close. Ero Copper Corp (TSX: ERO ) added 5.89% or 1.26 points to end at 22.67 and Westport Fuel Systems Inc (TSX: WPRT ) was up 5.85% or 0.23 points to 4.16 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TSX: CG ), which lost 3.96% or 0.38 points to trade at 9.21 in late trade. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) declined 1.79% or 0.040 points to end at 2.200 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) shed 1.59% or 0.15 points to 9.29.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 632 to 391 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.30% or 5.25 to $1756.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.87% or 1.45 to hit $78.88 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.75% or 1.42 to trade at $82.50 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.38% to 0.7972, while CAD/EUR rose 0.46% to 0.6902.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 94.218.
