Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.33%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT , Healthcare and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.33%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ), which rose 11.62% or 82.18 points to trade at 789.19 at the close. Nuvei Corp (TSX: NVEI ) added 10.12% or 7.40 points to end at 80.49 and Brookfield Business Corp (TSX: BBUC ) was up 9.72% or 3.68 points to 41.55 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX: EDR ), which lost 10.51% or 0.72 points to trade at 6.13 in late trade. Nutrien Ltd (TSX: NTR ) declined 4.28% or 5.33 points to end at 119.10 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) shed 3.99% or 0.11 points to 2.65.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 780 to 277 and 75 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.37% to 17.60 a new 1-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.23% or 4.35 to $1,925.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.72% or 1.66 to hit $94.78 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 2.32% or 2.32 to trade at $97.59 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.64% to 0.79, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.06% to 0.71.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.71% at 98.36.
