Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.90%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Energy and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.90%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Nuvei Corp (TSX: NVEI ), which rose 15.23% or 10.21 points to trade at 77.24 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ) added 8.85% or 1.000 points to end at 12.300 and Paramount Resources Ltd . (TSX: POU ) was up 8.15% or 1.77 points to 23.50 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Jamieson Wellness Inc (TSX: JWEL ), which lost 2.39% or 0.97 points to trade at 39.70 in late trade. Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP ) declined 1.56% or 0.45 points to end at 28.45 and Empire Company Ltd (TSX: EMPa ) shed 0.78% or 0.31 points to 39.24.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 772 to 252 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 18.15% to 13.48.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.30% or 5.45 to $1789.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 4.07% or 2.79 to hit $71.40 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 3.69% or 2.64 to trade at $74.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7739, while CAD/EUR rose 0.18% to 0.6862.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 96.475.
