Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials , Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.00%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CAE Inc. (TSX: CAE ), which rose 4.10% or 1.47 points to trade at 37.28 at the close. Cott Corp (TSX: BCB ) added 4.00% or 0.71 points to end at 18.48 and Freehold Royalties Ltd . (TSX: FRU ) was up 3.51% or 0.27 points to 7.96 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TSX: WTE ), which lost 10.62% or 1.98 points to trade at 16.67 in late trade. Encana Corporation (TSX: ECA ) declined 7.40% or 0.47 points to end at 5.88 and Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ) shed 7.28% or 0.15 points to 1.91.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 553 to 482 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 12.68.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.11% or 17.50 to $1556.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 4.11% or 2.58 to hit $60.12 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 3.37% or 2.30 to trade at $65.97 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.23% to 0.7671, while CAD/EUR rose 0.18% to 0.6905.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 97.007.
