Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.02%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary , Clean Technology and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.02%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ), which rose 32.61% or 4.54 points to trade at 18.46 at the close. Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ) added 10.09% or 2.07 points to end at 22.58 and Village Farms International Inc (TSX: VFF ) was up 9.91% or 1.14 points to 12.64 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Westport Fuel Systems Inc (TSX: WPRT ), which lost 12.88% or 1.05 points to trade at 7.10 in late trade. Interfor Corp (TSX: IFP ) declined 6.21% or 1.95 points to end at 29.43 and Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP ) shed 5.60% or 1.67 points to 28.17.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 625 to 442 and 87 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.29% or 5.45 to $1910.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.48% or 1.00 to hit $68.72 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.44% or 1.01 to trade at $71.26 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.33% to 0.8309, while CAD/EUR rose 0.36% to 0.6804.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 89.895.
