Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.03%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials , Energy and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.03%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Denison Mines Corp (TSX: DML ), which rose 5.78% or 0.10 points to trade at 1.83 at the close. NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE ) added 3.20% or 0.170 points to end at 5.490 and Canaccord Genuity Group Inc (TSX: CF ) was up 2.85% or 0.41 points to 14.79 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX: TRQ ), which lost 8.41% or 1.75 points to trade at 19.05 in late trade. Nuvei Corp (TSX: NVEI ) declined 5.40% or 3.67 points to end at 64.25 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN ) shed 5.16% or 0.53 points to 9.74.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 666 to 341 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 11.06% to 13.11.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.48% or 8.50 to $1763.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.14% or 0.10 to hit $70.83 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.24% or 0.18 to trade at $73.88 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.28% to 0.7752, while CAD/EUR fell 0.04% to 0.6901.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.24% at 96.765.
