Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.09%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , Healthcare and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.09%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were West Fraser Timber Co Ltd (TSX: WFG ), which rose 9.62% or 9.74 points to trade at 110.94 at the close. Interfor Corp (TSX: IFP ) added 7.81% or 2.72 points to end at 37.54 and Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX: SES ) was up 5.12% or 0.31 points to 6.37 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ), which lost 13.94% or 106.58 points to trade at 658.05 in late trade. Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ) declined 8.28% or 0.61 points to end at 6.76 and goeasy Ltd (TSX: GSY ) shed 7.09% or 9.44 points to 123.70.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 598 to 447 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 22.34% to 12.32.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.05% or 1.05 to $1,957.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.64% or 0.65 to hit $102.70 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.20% or 0.21 to trade at $107.46 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.98% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.42% to 0.74.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.61% at 100.35.
