Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.37%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy , Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.37%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Waste Connections Inc (TSX: WCN ), which rose 4.86% or 6.05 points to trade at 130.50 at the close. Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc (TSX: ATDb ) added 3.93% or 1.72 points to end at 45.45 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) was up 3.87% or 1.05 points to 28.16 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Methanex Corporation (TSX: MX ), which lost 5.13% or 1.32 points to trade at 24.39 in late trade. Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TSX: VII ) declined 4.94% or 0.16 points to end at 3.08 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) shed 4.84% or 0.60 points to 11.80.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 683 to 332 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.65% or 11.80 to $1808.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 3.35% or 1.37 to hit $39.53 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.22% or 0.96 to trade at $42.33 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7361, while CAD/EUR fell 0.10% to 0.6524.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.41% at 96.765.
