Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.50%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy , IT and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.50%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cargojet Inc (TSX: CJT ), which rose 5.20% or 5.35 points to trade at 108.33 at the close. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX: BEP_u ) added 4.33% or 1.46 points to end at 35.21 and CCL Industries Inc (TSX: CCLb ) was up 4.04% or 2.26 points to 58.18 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which lost 7.40% or 0.35 points to trade at 4.38 in late trade. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd (TSX: CNQ ) declined 5.69% or 5.13 points to end at 85.09 and Dye & Durham Ltd (TSX: DND ) shed 5.63% or 0.76 points to 12.74.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 506 to 470 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.88% to 11.45.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.37% or 7.55 to $2,043.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 4.31% or 3.12 to hit $69.20 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.91% or 3.02 to trade at $74.18 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.26% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 104.14.
