Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.53%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.53%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ), which rose 7.65% or 1.52 points to trade at 21.39 at the close. Jamieson Wellness Inc (TSX: JWEL ) added 5.06% or 1.92 points to end at 39.85 and Corus Entertainment Inc (TSX: CJRb ) was up 3.09% or 0.10 points to 3.34 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ), which lost 6.72% or 0.17 points to trade at 2.36 in late trade. Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX: WCP ) declined 6.72% or 0.18 points to end at 2.50 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) shed 5.49% or 0.31 points to 5.34.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 644 to 382 and 129 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.01% or 0.25 to $1946.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.21% or 0.52 to hit $42.30 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.31% or 0.59 to trade at $44.31 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.01% to 0.7583, while CAD/EUR rose 0.55% to 0.6428.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 93.195.
