Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.62%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare , Clean Technology and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.62%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Nuvei Corp (TSX: NVEI ), which rose 10.00% or 7.31 points to trade at 80.43 at the close. Osisko Mining Corp (TSX: OSK ) added 4.81% or 0.17 points to end at 3.60 and North West Company Inc (TSX: NWC ) was up 4.30% or 1.54 points to 37.35 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Kinross Gold Corporation (TSX: K ), which lost 10.47% or 0.78 points to trade at 6.67 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) declined 6.02% or 1.10 points to end at 17.18 and WELL Health Technologies Corp (TSX: WELL ) shed 5.57% or 0.310 points to 5.260.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 654 to 322 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.68% to 14.38.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.54% or 9.60 to $1775.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.62% or 1.17 to hit $71.19 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.62% or 1.23 to trade at $74.59 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.37% to 0.7873, while CAD/EUR rose 0.09% to 0.6973.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 96.237.
