Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.67%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the REITs , Real Estate and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.67%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Trillium Therapeutics Inc (TSX: TRIL ), which rose 4.65% or 0.71 points to trade at 15.97 at the close. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) added 4.23% or 1.10 points to end at 27.12 and Methanex Corporation (TSX: MX ) was up 3.77% or 2.11 points to 58.10 in late trade.

Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ), which lost 15.79% or 1.66 points to trade at 8.85 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX: ENGH ) declined 8.88% or 6.03 points to end at 61.86 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) shed 5.91% or 0.150 points to 2.390.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 666 to 438 and 86 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.24% or 4.45 to $1885.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.49% or 0.72 to hit $49.08 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.51% or 0.78 to trade at $52.28 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.44% to 0.7825, while CAD/EUR fell 0.28% to 0.6388.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 89.910.
