Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.70%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare , Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.70%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Dollarama Inc (TSX: DOL ), which rose 3.25% or 2.35 points to trade at 74.64 at the close. Loblaw Companies Limited (TSX: L ) added 3.06% or 3.42 points to end at 115.22 and CGI Inc (TSX: GIBa ) was up 2.59% or 2.61 points to 103.43 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Lithium Americas Corp (TSX: LAC ), which lost 10.62% or 5.14 points to trade at 43.27 in late trade. Equinox Gold Corp (TSX: EQX ) declined 6.06% or 0.65 points to end at 10.07 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ) shed 5.88% or 0.56 points to 8.96.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 777 to 281 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.35% to 14.70.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.71% or 13.80 to $1,920.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.50% or 2.58 to hit $100.70 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.00% or 2.15 to trade at $105.38 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.62% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.51% at 99.47.
