Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.08%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Materials , Healthcare and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.08%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cargojet Inc (TSX: CJT ), which rose 5.10% or 9.98 points to trade at 205.69 at the close. Parex Resources Inc (TSX: PXT ) added 3.78% or 0.54 points to end at 14.81 and Trillium Therapeutics Inc (TSX: TRIL ) was up 3.71% or 0.72 points to 20.15 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TSX: CG ), which lost 15.31% or 2.41 points to trade at 13.33 in late trade. Cascades Inc . (TSX: CAS ) declined 8.06% or 1.42 points to end at 16.19 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN ) shed 7.57% or 0.37 points to 4.52.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 627 to 417 and 125 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.56% or 30.00 to $1890.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.45% or 0.96 to hit $40.18 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.18% or 0.90 to trade at $42.19 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.7517, while CAD/EUR rose 0.07% to 0.6400.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 93.817.
