Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.10%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare , Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.10%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which rose 2.86% or 0.25 points to trade at 9.00 at the close. Constellation Software Inc . (TSX: CSU ) added 2.18% or 41.21 points to end at 1,929.53 and Nutrien Ltd (TSX: NTR ) was up 2.18% or 2.42 points to 113.31 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX: EFR ), which lost 9.21% or 0.83 points to trade at 8.18 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX: ENGH ) declined 8.44% or 2.29 points to end at 24.85 and Hut 8 Mining Corp (TSX: HUT ) shed 7.01% or 0.19 points to 2.52.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 834 to 204 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.30% to 18.22.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.31% or 5.80 to $1,850.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.70% or 0.86 to hit $121.25 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.74 to trade at $122.84 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.10% to 0.79, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.17% to 0.74.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.76% at 103.32.
