Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.58%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials , Energy and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.58% to hit a new 1-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mullen Group Ltd . (TSX: MTL ), which rose 5.14% or 0.66 points to trade at 13.50 at the close. Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX: SES ) added 4.71% or 0.30 points to end at 6.67 and Air Canada (TSX: AC ) was up 2.75% or 0.66 points to 24.66 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Lithium Americas Corp (TSX: LAC ), which lost 12.36% or 4.90 points to trade at 34.73 in late trade. Sprott Inc . (TSX: SII ) declined 11.89% or 8.35 points to end at 61.86 and Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX: EFR ) shed 11.22% or 1.37 points to 10.84.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 838 to 216 and 105 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.98% to 13.18.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.13% or 2.50 to $1,953.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.83% or 1.87 to hit $104.06 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.68% or 1.79 to trade at $108.59 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.61% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.47% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 100.60.
