Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 3.78%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare , REITs and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 3.78%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Kinross Gold Corporation (TSX: K ), which rose 11.15% or 0.63 points to trade at 6.28 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TSX: IMG ) added 9.38% or 0.30 points to end at 3.50 and SSR Mining Inc (TSX: SSRM ) was up 8.66% or 1.39 points to 17.44 in late trade.

Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ), which lost 17.33% or 1.00 points to trade at 4.77 in late trade. Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX: LSPD ) declined 17.23% or 3.28 points to end at 15.76 and Hexo Corp (TSX: HEXO ) shed 13.91% or 0.160 points to 0.990.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 848 to 196 and 81 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.25% or 4.05 to $1600.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.64% or 0.54 to hit $21.02 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 3.42% or 0.90 to trade at $25.45 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.82% to 0.7052, while CAD/EUR fell 0.16% to 0.6435.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.47% at 99.555.
