Earnings season begins: 5 key factors this Friday on the stock market

Investing.com - This Friday the big banks in the US kick off the corporate earnings season.

Today Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), speaks.

Cryptocurrencies slow their gains this morning.

Here are five factors for investors to consider when making their decisions today:

1. Corporate earnings season begins

JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM ), Wells Fargo  (NYSE: WFC ), Citigroup (NYSE: C ) and BlackRock (NYSE: BLK ) kick off the US corporate earnings season.

The outlook is generally good for S&P 500 companies. The consensus expects good figures.

2. Lagarde speaks (ECB)

At 15:30 local time, ECB President Christine Lagarde will appear. We will be watching to see if Lagarde gives any clues about the withdrawal of stimulus by the ECB or about the economic outlook for the Eurozone.

3. Crypto, down again

The cryptocurrency sector has paused in the upward trend that began in midweek. Bitcoin is trading at 42,000 dollars and Ethereum at 3,200.

4. Asia and the American stock market

Positive signs today in the main Asian indices. The Nikkei is up 0.01%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng is up 1.6% and the Shanghai Composite is up 0.1%.

On Wall Street, the market ended yesterday in the red. The S&P 500 (-0.1%), Nasdaq (-0.1%) and Dow Jones (-0.4%) closed lower.

5. Macroeconomic data

The main macroeconomic releases include UK GDP , trade balance and industrial production , French CPI and budget balance , Spanish CPI and Euro zone trade balance .

In the US we will see retail sales , industrial production and consumer confidence from the University of Michigan.

South African markets closed in the green yesterday.
