Australia shares higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 1.14%

Investing.com – Australia equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms Services , Utilities and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 1.14%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Lynas Corporation Ltd (AX: LYC ), which rose 6.82% or 0.150 points to trade at 2.350 at the close. Vocus Group Ltd (AX: VOC ) added 6.19% or 0.140 points to end at 2.400 and Australian Pharma Industries Ltd (AX: API ) was up 5.00% or 0.075 points to 1.575 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Retail Food Group Ltd (AX: RFG ), which lost 11.97% or 0.155 points to trade at 1.140 in late trade. Nufarm Ltd (AX: NUF ) declined 2.45% or 0.200 points to end at 7.950 and Myer Holdings Ltd (AX: MYR ) shed 2.17% or 0.010 points to 0.450.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 711 to 537 and 380 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 7.47% to 14.165.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.27% or 3.60 to $1323.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $62.58 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.14% or 0.09 to trade at $65.45 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.12% to 0.7772, while AUD/JPY fell 0.07% to 82.41.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 89.94.
