Australia shares lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.06%
Credit: © Reuters. – Australia equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Gold , Energy and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.06%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Monadelphous Group Ltd (AX: MND ), which rose 4.62% or 0.440 points to trade at 9.970 at the close. Medibank Private Ltd (AX: MPL ) added 3.68% or 0.110 points to end at 3.100 and JB Hi-Fi Ltd (AX: JBH ) was up 3.33% or 0.820 points to 25.410 in late trade.

Biggest losers included St Barbara Ltd (AX: SBM ), which lost 5.41% or 0.165 points to trade at 2.885 in late trade. Isentia Group Ltd (AX: ISD ) declined 5.23% or 0.170 points to end at 3.080 and Seven West Media Ltd (AX: SWM ) shed 3.88% or 0.043 points to 1.052.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 574 to 498 and 322 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 1.51% to 15.099.

In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.03% or 0.45 to $1326.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.14% or 0.06 to hit $43.19 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.24% or 0.11 to trade at $45.24 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.70% to 0.7522, while AUD/JPY fell 0.65% to 78.53.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.29% at 97.00.
