Brazil shares higher at close of trade; Bovespa up 1.28% – Brazil equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials , Public Utilities and Electric Power sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa rose 1.28% to hit a new 3-year high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Bovespa were Vale SA (SA: VALE3 ), which rose 9.18% or 3.01 points to trade at 35.81 at the close. Bradespar SA (SA: BRAP4 ) added 7.66% or 1.67 points to end at 23.47 and Vale SA Pref (SA: VALE5 ) was up 6.79% or 2.12 points to 33.35 in late trade.

Biggest losers included MRV Engenharia e Participacoes SA (SA: MRVE3 ), which lost 2.00% or 0.28 points to trade at 13.72 in late trade. Cyrela Brazil Realty SA (SA: CYRE3 ) declined 1.98% or 0.28 points to end at 13.86 and BR Malls Participacoes SA (SA: BRML3 ) shed 1.44% or 0.22 points to 15.10.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 268 to 127 and 31 ended unchanged on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility , which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was down 1.37% to 26.01 a new 52-week low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.68% or 8.45 to $1227.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.84% or 0.99 to hit $52.87 a barrel, while the May US coffee C contract fell 0.88% or 1.30 to trade at $146.85 .

USD/BRL was down 0.14% to 3.1115, while EUR/BRL fell 0.50% to 3.2982.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.23% at 100.95.
