Brazil shares lower at close of trade; Bovespa down 1.86%

Investing.com – Brazil equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials , Public Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa fell 1.86%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Bovespa were Ultrapar Participacoes SA (SA: UGPA3 ), which rose 2.92% or 2.10 points to trade at 74.10 at the close. Ambev SA (SA: ABEV3 ) added 2.53% or 0.47 points to end at 19.03 and Cielo SA (SA: CIEL3 ) was up 0.96% or 0.22 points to 23.17 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Cia Siderurgica Nacional SA (SA: CSNA3 ), which lost 6.84% or 0.52 points to trade at 7.08 in late trade. Metalurgica Gerdau SA (SA: GOAU4 ) declined 6.43% or 0.29 points to end at 4.22 and Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras SA (SA: ELET3 ) shed 5.66% or 1.00 points to 16.67.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 257 to 97 and 29 ended unchanged on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility , which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was up 5.86% to 31.98.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.49% or 18.61 to $1229.89 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 4.87% or 2.33 to hit $45.49 a barrel, while the July US coffee C contract fell 1.51% or 2.07 to trade at $135.05 .

USD/BRL was up 0.55% to 3.1822, while EUR/BRL rose 1.46% to 3.4954.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.66% at 98.60.
