Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.06%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT , Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.06% to hit a new 3-month high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TO: BB ), which rose 12.75% or 1.47 points to trade at 13.00 at the close. Superior Plus Corp (TO: SPB ) added 6.05% or 0.71 points to end at 12.45 and HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO: HBM ) was up 5.89% or 0.52 points to 9.35 in late trade.

Biggest losers included DHX Media Ltd B (TO: DHXb ), which lost 16.11% or 0.97 points to trade at 5.05 in late trade. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO: VRX ) declined 4.84% or 0.87 points to end at 17.09 and Peyto Exploration&Development Corp (TO: PEY ) shed 4.57% or 0.99 points to 20.66.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 720 to 384 and 132 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 14.71% to 12.32.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.19% or 2.39 to $1290.19 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.07% or 0.56 to hit $51.58 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.57% or 0.33 to trade at $57.24 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.8042, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6826.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.30% at 92.99.
