Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.18%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT , Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.18%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BRP Inc (TO: DOO ), which rose 6.55% or 2.37 points to trade at 38.54 at the close. CCL Industries Inc (TO: CCLb ) added 4.26% or 2.24 points to end at 54.88 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TO: WFT ) was up 3.98% or 2.52 points to 65.80 in late trade.

Biggest losers included CannTrust Holdings Inc (TO: TRST ), which lost 18.96% or 2.5500 points to trade at 10.9000 in late trade. Detour Gold Corporation (TO: DGC ) declined 7.30% or 0.98 points to end at 12.44 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO: ASR ) shed 6.22% or 0.250 points to 3.770.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 615 to 473 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.45% to 12.58.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.62% or 21.35 to $1295.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to hit $59.41 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.05 to trade at $67.19 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.22% to 0.7440, while CAD/EUR fell 0.03% to 0.6628.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.52% at 96.787.
