Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.33%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Discretionary , Healthcare and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.33%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BRP Inc (TSX: DOO ), which rose 9.21% or 4.04 points to trade at 47.89 at the close. Cronos Group Inc (TSX: CRON ) added 5.10% or 0.9800 points to end at 20.2100 and Linamar Corporation (TSX: LNR ) was up 3.61% or 1.58 points to 45.32 in late trade.

Biggest losers included SNC-Lavalin Group Inc . (TSX: SNC ), which lost 9.62% or 2.29 points to trade at 21.51 in late trade. Hexo Corp (TSX: HEXO ) declined 4.05% or 0.2500 points to end at 5.9300 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) shed 3.91% or 0.160 points to 3.930.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 591 to 435 and 139 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.10% to 9.96 a new 3-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.61% or 8.75 to $1418.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.65% or 0.93 to hit $57.15 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.08 to trade at $64.27 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 0.7613, while CAD/EUR rose 0.05% to 0.6827.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 97.417.
