Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.44%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT , Materials and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.44%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aphria Inc (TO: APHA ), which rose 7.79% or 0.570 points to trade at 7.890 at the close. Alamos Gold Inc (TO: AGI ) added 7.67% or 0.33 points to end at 4.63 and Martinrea International Inc . (TO: MRE ) was up 6.95% or 0.66 points to 10.15 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Baytex Energy Corp (TO: BTE ), which lost 9.09% or 0.20 points to trade at 2.00 in late trade. Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO: TVE ) declined 7.07% or 0.140 points to end at 1.840 and Whitecap Resources Inc . (TO: WCP ) shed 6.76% or 0.28 points to 3.86.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 668 to 489 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.46% to 20.55.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.12% or 1.55 to $1253.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 7.15% or 3.59 to hit $46.61 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 5.40% or 3.22 to trade at $56.39 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.30% to 0.7431, while CAD/EUR fell 0.50% to 0.6539.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 96.502.
