Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.51%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT , Telecoms and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.51%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp (TSX: ASR ), which rose 10.14% or 0.580 points to trade at 6.300 at the close. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX: WDO ) added 9.99% or 0.710 points to end at 7.820 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) was up 4.00% or 0.36 points to 9.37 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TSX: CG ), which lost 16.05% or 2.03 points to trade at 10.62 in late trade. Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TSX: MFI ) declined 13.66% or 3.96 points to end at 25.03 and HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX: HBM ) shed 4.91% or 0.25 points to 4.84.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 574 to 486 and 105 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.42% to 11.02 a new 3-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.49% or 7.25 to $1497.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.94% or 0.52 to hit $55.02 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $60.17 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.02% to 0.7601, while CAD/EUR rose 0.04% to 0.6816.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 97.255.
