Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.12%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.12%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Veresen Inc . (TO: VSN ), which rose 10.84% or 1.19 points to trade at 12.17 at the close. Mitel Networks Corporation (TO: MNW ) added 10.02% or 0.97 points to end at 10.65 and Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TO: VII ) was up 9.70% or 2.65 points to 29.98 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Stantec Inc. (TO: STN ), which lost 6.75% or 2.20 points to trade at 30.39 in late trade. Great-West Lifeco Inc . (TO: GWO ) declined 5.89% or 1.99 points to end at 31.77 and Manulife Financial Corporation (TO: MFC ) shed 5.41% or 0.97 points to 16.95.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 685 to 450 and 148 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.35% to 14.15.

In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.16% or 2.20 to $1366.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.30% or 0.94 to hit $41.77 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.46% or 1.06 to trade at $44.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.27% to 0.7674, while CAD/EUR rose 0.47% to 0.6896.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.25% at 95.73.
