Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.76%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Materials , Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.76%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO: PVG ), which rose 7.91% or 0.88 points to trade at 12.00 at the close. Asanko Gold Inc (TO: AKG ) added 7.52% or 0.310 points to end at 4.430 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO: IVN ) was up 7.09% or 0.180 points to 2.720 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO: AAV ), which lost 4.17% or 0.380 points to trade at 8.740 in late trade. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO: BIR ) declined 3.74% or 0.35 points to end at 9.02 and BRP Inc. (TO: DOO ) shed 2.79% or 0.79 points to 27.56.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 737 to 427 and 126 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.25% to 12.94 a new 1-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.69% or 7.95 to $1159.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.31% or 1.24 to hit $52.48 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.06% or 1.17 to trade at $55.65 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7443, while CAD/EUR rose 0.70% to 0.7152.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.87% at 103.26.
