Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.12%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials , Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.12%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO: PLI ), which rose 4.83% or 0.070 points to trade at 1.520 at the close. Teck Resources Ltd B (TO: TECKb ) added 4.75% or 1.58 points to end at 34.87 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO: IVN ) was up 4.71% or 0.130 points to 2.890 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Sierra Wireless Inc . (TO: SW ), which lost 13.60% or 3.14 points to trade at 19.94 in late trade. Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO: GUY ) declined 7.60% or 0.370 points to end at 4.500 and Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO: ELD ) shed 7.05% or 0.11 points to 1.45.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 856 to 320 and 103 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 9.68% to 21.64 a new 52-week high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.14% or 1.80 to $1317.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 3.14% or 1.92 to hit $59.23 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 3.13% or 2.03 to trade at $62.78 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.09% to 0.7943, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.6487.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 90.27.
