Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.26%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Clean Technology , Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.26%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ), which rose 9.54% or 2.610 points to trade at 29.960 at the close. Cott Corporation (TO: BCB ) added 7.12% or 1.33 points to end at 20.00 and Aphria Inc (TO: APH ) was up 6.12% or 0.810 points to 14.040 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Cascades Inc . (TO: CAS ), which lost 14.10% or 2.24 points to trade at 13.65 in late trade. Crew Energy Inc (TO: CR ) declined 8.44% or 0.13 points to end at 1.41 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO: CPG ) shed 8.34% or 0.77 points to 8.46.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 757 to 369 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.20% to 16.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.03% or 0.40 to $1317.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.49% or 0.30 to hit $61.34 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.79% or 0.51 to trade at $64.22 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.7790, while CAD/EUR fell 0.56% to 0.6355.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.43% at 90.22.
