Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.26%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare , Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.26% to hit a new 1-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BRP Inc (TSX: DOO ), which rose 15.57% or 5.63 points to trade at 41.79 at the close. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX: TXG ) added 4.61% or 0.530 points to end at 12.020 and Alamos Gold Inc (TSX: AGI ) was up 4.34% or 0.26 points to 6.25 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX: TRQ ), which lost 6.06% or 0.100 points to trade at 1.550 in late trade. Encana Corporation (TSX: ECA ) declined 5.45% or 0.43 points to end at 7.46 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX: BIR ) shed 4.44% or 0.15 points to 3.23.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 666 to 405 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 11.17% to 14.24.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.54% or 6.90 to $1287.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 4.08% or 2.40 to hit $56.41 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $65.09 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.00% to 0.7407, while CAD/EUR fell 0.04% to 0.6652.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.05% at 98.080.
