Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.30%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Financials and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.30%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TO: BB ), which rose 13.18% or 1.57 points to trade at 13.48 at the close. HudBay Minerals Inc (TO: HBM ) added 2.80% or 0.26 points to end at 9.55 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO: FM ) was up 2.78% or 0.41 points to 15.15 in late trade.

Biggest losers included CannTrust Holdings Inc (TO: TRST ), which lost 4.95% or 0.5400 points to trade at 10.3600 in late trade. Bombardier Inc (TO: BBDb ) declined 4.46% or 0.120 points to end at 2.570 and BRP Inc (TO: DOO ) shed 3.79% or 1.46 points to 37.08.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 606 to 493 and 106 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.13% to 13.10.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.14% or 1.75 to $1297.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.50% or 0.89 to hit $60.19 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.80% or 0.54 to trade at $67.64 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.60% to 0.7486, while CAD/EUR rose 0.70% to 0.6672.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 96.820.
