Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.37%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , Healthcare and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.37%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Precision Drilling Corporation (TO: PD ), which rose 8.52% or 0.27 points to trade at 3.44 at the close. CES Energy Solutions Corp (TO: CEU ) added 5.17% or 0.290 points to end at 5.900 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO: BTE ) was up 4.37% or 0.17 points to 4.06 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO: GUY ), which lost 8.13% or 0.360 points to trade at 4.070 in late trade. Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ) declined 7.11% or 1.340 points to end at 17.510 and Shopify Inc (TO: SHOP ) shed 7.03% or 10.090 points to 133.400.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 665 to 506 and 113 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 41.74% to 9.95.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.89% or 11.56 to $1283.34 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.93% or 0.54 to hit $57.45 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.81% or 0.51 to trade at $62.73 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.36% to 0.7775, while CAD/EUR fell 0.44% to 0.6561.

The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 93.20.
