Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.72%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.72%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aphria Inc (TO: APH ), which rose 5.50% or 0.880 points to trade at 16.890 at the close. Semafo Inc . (TO: SMF ) added 4.47% or 0.14 points to end at 3.27 and Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO: GUY ) was up 3.65% or 0.130 points to 3.690 in late trade.

Biggest losers included MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO: MAXR ), which lost 4.42% or 1.87 points to trade at 40.45 in late trade. ARC Resources Ltd . (TO: ARX ) declined 4.15% or 0.60 points to end at 13.85 and CES Energy Solutions Corp (TO: CEU ) shed 3.62% or 0.180 points to 4.790.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 575 to 467 and 138 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.92% to 13.38.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.04% or 0.50 to $1205.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.47% or 0.33 to hit $69.92 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.42% or 0.33 to trade at $77.69 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7661, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.6600.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.41% at 95.03.
