Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.83%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy , Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.83% to hit a new 1-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Stars Group Inc (TSX: TSGI ), which rose 30.81% or 6.24 points to trade at 26.49 at the close. Winpak Ltd. (TSX: WPK ) added 8.40% or 3.62 points to end at 46.69 and Alacer Gold Corp (TSX: ASR ) was up 5.35% or 0.280 points to 5.510 in late trade.

Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ), which lost 7.69% or 0.83 points to trade at 9.96 in late trade. Tourmaline Oil Corp . (TSX: TOU ) declined 6.52% or 0.82 points to end at 11.76 and Exchange Income Corporation (TSX: EIF ) shed 5.36% or 2.180 points to 38.520.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 758 to 334 and 102 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.66% to 15.04 a new 1-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.11% or 16.60 to $1505.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.13% or 1.14 to hit $52.48 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $57.49 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.02% to 0.7503, while CAD/EUR fell 0.02% to 0.6845.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 98.697.
