Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.85%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare , IT and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.85%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Boralex Inc (TO: BLX ), which rose 6.31% or 1.05 points to trade at 17.70 at the close. SSR Mining Inc (TO: SSRM ) added 3.48% or 0.48 points to end at 14.27 and Quebecor Inc Class B (TO: QBRb ) was up 3.11% or 0.86 points to 28.48 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TO: APHA ), which lost 13.63% or 2.360 points to trade at 14.960 in late trade. Kinaxis Inc (TO: KXS ) declined 7.69% or 5.69 points to end at 68.34 and Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO: GUY ) shed 7.50% or 0.120 points to 1.480.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 734 to 355 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 17.56% to 19.75.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.42% or 5.10 to $1201.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.89% or 1.14 to hit $59.05 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.24% or 0.87 to trade at $69.31 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.22% to 0.7553, while CAD/EUR rose 0.75% to 0.6729.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.76% at 97.47.
