Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.78%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy , Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.78% to hit a new 3-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Klondex Mines Ltd (TO: KDX ), which rose 5.33% or 0.130 points to trade at 2.570 at the close. MAG Silver Corp . (TO: MAG ) added 4.65% or 0.59 points to end at 13.29 and Novagold Resources Inc . (TO: NG ) was up 4.01% or 0.18 points to 4.67 in late trade.

Biggest losers included ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO: PLI ), which lost 6.47% or 0.110 points to trade at 1.590 in late trade. NexGen Energy Ltd. (TO: NXE ) declined 4.68% or 0.130 points to end at 2.650 and Bombardier Inc (TO: BBDb ) shed 4.53% or 0.150 points to 3.160.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 934 to 258 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 31.26% to 18.39 a new 52-week high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.28% or 3.80 to $1341.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.73% or 1.79 to hit $63.66 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.94% or 1.33 to trade at $67.25 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.72% to 0.7988, while CAD/EUR fell 0.22% to 0.6446.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 89.40.
