Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.28%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy , Real Estate and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.28%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO: IVN ), which rose 4.03% or 0.140 points to trade at 3.610 at the close. Finning International Inc . (TO: FTT ) added 3.97% or 1.03 points to end at 26.96 and BRP Inc. (TO: DOO ) was up 2.58% or 0.69 points to 27.42 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Cameco Corp (TO: CCO ), which lost 16.92% or 2.93 points to trade at 14.39 in late trade. TORC Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO: TOG ) declined 6.62% or 0.52 points to end at 7.33 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO: BTE ) shed 4.70% or 0.27 points to 5.48.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 746 to 417 and 138 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.71% to 12.58.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.72% or 8.70 to $1204.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.17% or 1.14 to hit $51.34 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.22% or 1.23 to trade at $54.24 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.66% to 0.7541, while CAD/EUR fell 0.94% to 0.7090.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.99% at 101.25.
