Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.31% – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare , Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.31%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Dominion Diamond Corp (TO: DDC ), which rose 23.16% or 3.06 points to trade at 16.27 at the close. Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO: GUY ) added 5.47% or 0.370 points to end at 7.140 and Badger Daylighting Ltd . (TO: BAD ) was up 5.31% or 1.62 points to 32.11 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Stella-Jones Inc. (TO: SJ ), which lost 5.24% or 2.18 points to trade at 39.39 in late trade. NexGen Energy Ltd. (TO: NXE ) declined 3.68% or 0.130 points to end at 3.400 and Hudson's Bay Company (TO: HBC ) shed 3.60% or 0.39 points to 10.44.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 672 to 493 and 123 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.25% to 12.03.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.29% or 3.55 to $1233.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.83% or 0.41 to hit $48.90 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.25% or 0.13 to trade at $51.63 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.05% to 0.7488, while CAD/EUR fell 0.09% to 0.6971.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 100.15.
