Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.47%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary , Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.47%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Corus Entertainment Inc (TO: CJRb ), which rose 2.74% or 0.35 points to trade at 13.13 at the close. Nevsun Resources Ltd . (TO: NSU ) added 2.74% or 0.120 points to end at 4.500 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TO: BBU_u ) was up 2.69% or 0.85 points to 32.40 in late trade.

Biggest losers included MEG Energy Corp (TO: MEG ), which lost 5.41% or 0.46 points to trade at 7.96 in late trade. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO: ELD ) declined 4.49% or 0.20 points to end at 4.37 and Precision Drilling Corporation (TO: PD ) shed 3.55% or 0.27 points to 7.34.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 654 to 493 and 131 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 12.66% to 12.99.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.02% or 0.25 to $1196.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.55% or 0.81 to hit $53.06 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.78% or 0.98 to trade at $56.08 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.33% to 0.7612, while CAD/EUR fell 0.03% to 0.7167.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.31% at 101.38.
